The Year 5 Curriculum
English, Maths and Guided Reading take place each day and other subjects such as Science, History, Geography, ICT, PSHE, PE Art and Design & Technology, French, Music and RE are often covered through the cross-curricular learning topics We start or finish each topic with a 'WOW! factor' that helps to engage the children or consolidate their learning.
Year five children are involved in the Whitgift Foundation ICT project which gives many children the opportunity to spend a week at Whitgift School working on technology projects as well as taster session of things such as Japanese, Russian, sketching animals and even science in a proper science lab! Those who stay at school have a varied, ICT-based curriculum for that time. It is also the year when every child has the opportunity to learn Steel Pan and if you are lucky (and show a talent) be picked for the Woodside Steel Band in year 6.
Each week, one home learning task will be set. Although this is recorded in your home learning logs, it also gives you the opportunity to show your creative side whilst extending your learning. The task will include English, Maths or another area. Everyone is expected to read some pages of a chosen book each night and you or your parents/carers should record this in the reading record books as we award certificates for those who practise their reading daily – a very important skill!
Children in Year 5 also run a snack shop at break times for years 3-6, selling healthy snacks at competitive prices. The children have the responsibility for selling the items, stock control and deciding where to invest the profit.
